After the Quest drops were off, we still couldn’t quite get back to business as usual due to the Tustumena 200 happening over the weekend (see photo of sign they put up for road crossing — not one you see everyday, especially outside of Alaska). Cole opted to sit the event out this year, since it was so close to the Quest, she didn’t want to risk any more dog injuries than we’ve already been plagued with. Still she ended up helping out several friends that were in the race. Joseph was also busy as well, the local radio station asked if he would would co-commentate the race. As anyone that knows Joseph knows, he loves talking about mushing, so he gladly accepted. Here is a photo of him on race day discussing something with DJ Joe Nicks.
Also, for Joseph, the return of the T-200 means it is once again time to defend his competitive eating title. Annually Joseph participates in this race-related food challenge. He won the spaghetti eating contest in both 2007 and 2008, so this year the organizers tried to break his stride by changing the menu from pasta to ice cream (see photo). However, when it comes to eating, Joseph can’t be beat, and he swallowed the competition to become the Kasilof Ice Cream Eating Champion, finishing several ounces more Neapolitan than the other entrants. Colleen even threw her name in the hat for the contest, but sadly she is not as good at eating as she is at mushing. She finished in last place, but since she was the only woman in the contest we view her performance as first in the woman’s division.

I’m so proud to call Joseph family. How did you combat brain freeze during this?
